Women's South Shore Golf League History

In 1926 women from six golf clubs south of Boston banded together to form a golf league with the purpose of promoting friendly, inter-club competition and social interaction during the summer months. They named it the Women’s South Shore Golf League. The six clubs are thought to be Cohasset, Duxbury, Hatherly, Marshfield, South Shore and Wollaston, but records are missing prior to 1948 to confirm this.

Complete records begin in 1948 showing that Scituate joined in 1952; South Shore withdrew in 1954; and Plymouth joined in 1955. The league was comprised of these seven teams for the next 18 years until Halifax joined in 1973, making our current total of eight teams.

The League Championship (now the two-day Four Ball Championship) was originally an individual championship, played over five days. It’s first recorded winner was Nancy Black in 1947 and she was the league champion 17 times.

The league has had many golfers attain state prominence for their dedication and contributions to the game: Edith Noblit Baker (Marshfield); Cris Eaton (Duxbury); Dolly Sullivan (Marshfield); Pippi Roony O’Connor (Hatherly); Nancy Black (Marshfield/Cohasset); and Louise Mariani (Halifax), to name a few.
